Barrett, George

George Morgan Barrett, Jr, “Red”, of Plainville, Connecticut passed away on Monday, September 26, 2011 at the age of 85. George was born in Hartford, Connecticut on Wednesday, October 28, 1925. His parent’s were George Morgan Barrett and Mae Eva (Moulton) Barrett of West Hartford, Connecticut. He grew up on the family apple orchard in West Hartford with his younger sister Barbara Mae (Barrett) Gauthier and younger brothers Eugene Spencer Barrett and Russell Irwin Barrett. From an early age George had a love of automobiles and airplanes. At age 14 he did odd jobs at Brainard Field in Hartford to earn money for flying lessons and on Wednesday, April 15, 1942, at age 16, he became Connecticut’s youngest licensed pilot. He joined the Army Air Corps during World War Two and graduated from St. Anselm College as a Flight Officer. Fortunately, the war ended soon there after. George continued his interest in airplanes and owned several during the next decade. He began working in the construction industry as a heavy equipment mechanic and went on to become the Master Mechanic at Kessler Construction Co. of Hartford Connecticut, from which he retired. George married Roberta Elsie Atwater of New Britain, Connecticut on Saturday, February 25, 1950. They moved into the house he had just built on one corner of the now sub-divided old family apple orchard in West Hartford. George and Roberta raised two children; Brian Harry Barrett of Burlington, Connecticut and Ruth Mae (Barrett) Beaky of Scotland, Connecticut. George spent each summer of his later years at the Advent Christian Campground in Plainville, CT. He lived there in a cottage built about 100 years ago by his grandfather, John Calvin Barrett. Many of John’s descendants owned cottages there throughout the 1900’s. And that is where George was when he passed away on Monday. George is survived by: his former wife Roberta Atwater Barrett of Southington, Connecticut; his son Brian and his wife Ellen of Burlington, Connecticut; his daughter Ruth and her husband Michael P.
