Fleming, Mary

Mary Elizabeth (Fredenburgh) Fleming, 94, of Unionville, died Sunday, June 24th at home. She was born in 1917 in Seneca Falls, NY; the daughter of Paul Fredenburgh and Mary (Muldoon) Fredenburgh. Her mother died within five days of her birth. Her paternal grandparents brought her to Hartford when she was three months old. Her grandmother died when she was four and Mary soon came to be under the care of Mrs. Abby Wiley, the choir director and organist at the Methodist Church on Park Street in Hartford. Mary lived with the Wileys from age six until she was 17. Mary graduated from Keuka College in upstate New York with a degree in business and economics and a minor in French. Over the years, she worked at G. Fox, the Hartford Fire, and, during WWII, at a tool manufacturer for Pratt & Whitney. In 1949 she joined the assessor’s office in the Town of West Hartford, remaining there for 35 years. Mary was a loyal and longtime member of the Memorial United Methodist Church of Avon, serving in a number of capacities, including many years as financial secretary. She is survived by her two sons: Jerry and his wife Pamela (Parmentier) of Southington and Ronald and his wife Pamela (Paulsen) of Avon. She also leaves three grandchildren: Nathan Fleming (his wife Bibrama), Elizabeth Barmach (her husband Michael) and Colin Fleming, and two great grandchildren – Emma Barmach and Mira Fleming. She is also survived by her sister Jean of upstate New York. She is predeceased by her former husband Ronald F. Fleming. Mary had a great ability to make and keep friends. In recent years, as her health became more of a challenge, several friends were especially helpful to allowing Mary to remain independent: Dane Ingversten of Avon, Bette Jones and Joan Cuminale both of Unionville. There are many others too numerous to mention. Friends may call at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St., Rt. 4, Unionville on Friday (June 29) from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Saturday (June 30) at 10:30 AM at the Memorial United Methodist Church, 867 West Avon Road, Avon with Rev. Tony Mecca officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Avon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Keuka College, 141 Central Avenue, Keuka Park, New York 14478.

What a wonderful lady. Since the day we met we became instant friends. Even though we had 40 years between us, when we talked there was no age difference. We had such laughs. Her sense of humor was priceless, and her deep caring unmeasurable. Her stories, extrodinary. Her love of family, never ending.
She will be missed. My deepest sympathy goes out to all of you. She was one of a kind. God has her now, but we will always have our memories. God Bless.
