Hughes, Marie

Marie Hughes, 91, of West Hartford, passed peacefully on Monday, October 8, 2012, into the loving arms of her family. Born in Hartford, daughter of Frank and Marie Corthouts, she attended St. Joseph Cathedral School and graduated from Mt. St. Joseph Academy. She then attended St. Joseph College. In her early career, Marie worked at the Connecticut Mutual Insurance Company and various banks in Hartford. During WWII, she worked at Pratt and Whitney and later at Fort Devens as a member of the American Red Cross. She greatly enjoyed her years at the Hartford Insurance Group, where she retired after 25 years as an underwriter. Requested by her brother, Dr. James Corthouts, to work in his dental office “for a short time”, she welcomed long-standing and new clients, for many years, engaging them in conversation and shared stories of Hartford. Beth, her niece and partner in adventures, will attest that occasionally Marie did manage to do some paperwork. All who knew Marie fondly remember her as a generous, smart, energetic and interesting woman. Her engaging personality and wit made a lasting impression. Laughter was always nearby. She touched the lives of many. She loved to read, always with a cat and/or dog nearby. Marie looked forward to traveling near and far, always curious about people and places, but she especially treasured her trips to Holland to visit the Dutch cousins, Jessie and Ed Porteners, where she affectionately became known as “Mother Marie”. Many happy times and stories were shared about families and times on both sides of the ocean. Marie’s interest in people, new ideas, or experiences were always evident. She developed friends for life, and shared many fun and interesting times, especially with Sally and Melissa Meredith, Helen Leach, and Lucille Dal Ponte, among many others. She loved antiquing, connecting old with new, and gardening and flowers gave her great pleasure. But clearly, her greatest love was for her family. Her care and love for her children, their spouses, and grandson, as well as many nieces and nephews, was boundless. She was very much loved and appreciated by them and will never be forgotten. We know she is with God, playing cards with Hokie, her sister-in-law (but really sister), dancing with Uncle Jimmy, skiing with Uncle George and laughing with her Mom and Pop. Her family wishes to offer their sincere gratitude for the extraordinary care and attention given to Marie by the staff at St. Francis Hospital and by the many caring Hospice Care staff members. Marie is survived by her children, Jack Hughes of West Hartford, Peter Hughes of Frisco, Colorado, and Penny and her spouse, Bob DeFrino, of West Hartford, her grandson, John Hughes of San Diego, California, as well as many nieces and nephews. Marie was predeceased by her parents Marie and Frank Corthouts of Hartford, her brother Dr. James Corthouts and sister-in-law Viola Corthouts, as well as her brother George Corthouts and his spouse, Ruth, of Glastonbury. Funeral services and burial will be private.
