Thompson, Alice Mary

Thompson, AliceAlice M. Thompson, 58, of Avon, CT passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 29, 2016 with her family by her side after a long and courageous struggle with breast cancer. Born in Hartford, she was the daughter of Muriel and James Thompson of Farmington. Her beloved mother predeceased her in 2003. Alice was an accomplished graduate of the School of International Service at American University, where she majored in international studies and economics, and the New York University Stern School of Business, where she received her MBA in finance. Throughout her career, she worked for many organizations including Charles River Associates in Boston; Economists, Inc. in Washington, D.C.; Aetna Inc. and Aetna International, Inc. in Hartford; and Hartford Healthcare, where she worked most recently. Alice had a lifelong interest in film, especially short features. In her desire to bring together filmmakers and distributors, Alice co-founded in 1995 Film Fest New Haven, an annual festival showcasing independent films of all genres. In 1999, she also established Fortuna Films, a film production company. Alice was an inveterate and adventuresome world traveler who visited many countries in Europe, South America, South and Southeast Asia. She often traveled with family and friends, but also ventured solo to such remote destinations as Patagonia and the Galapagos Islands. She took delight in preparing gourmet meals and even combined her passion for travel and cooking by attending a culinary course in Positano, Italy. Alice appreciated beauty in many forms and especially enjoyed art, literature and design. She had a wonderful eye for style, always refined and elegant. Alice is survived by her beloved sister, Jane, and husband, Dr. Robert Breckinridge, of Avon; her dear brothers, James, and wife Shin Ae, of Avon, and Peter, and wife Sandra Troian, of Pasadena, CA; her cherished nieces, Soo Mi Thompson, Yoo Mi Thompson, and Sarah Breckinridge; and many cousins, relatives, and friends. Alice’s lifelong devotion to her family, warm camaraderie and sharp wit will be deeply missed by all those who knew her and whose lives she touched. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 3 at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea, located at 145 Main Street in Unionville, CT, with a burial following at Riverside Cemetery in Farmington.
