MenzelPaul W. Menzel, 90, died Monday, June 13, 2016, seven weeks after the death of Dorothy (Harvey) Menzel, his wife of 68 years.
Born December 4, 1925 in Hartford, he was the son of the late Walter and Helene (Ottman) Menzel. Paul graduated from Hartford Public High School and enlisted in the Navy in 1943. During World War II, he proudly served as a signalman aboard LSM 316, part of the naval amphibious forces in the South Pacific, and participated in a variety of naval campaigns and invasions.
After the war, Paul married Dot in 1947, moved to Farmington and raised a family. Together with his brother Howard, he built hundreds of homes in the Farmington area including The Highlands, High Point West and Twin Oaks.
A charter member of Bethany Lutheran Church in West Hartford, he served the church in various positions, including Sunday School teacher, Lay Minister, Deacon and Congregational President.
Paul was also a leader in a variety of civic organizations. He served on the Farmington Board of Education including four years as Chairman. A longtime member of the Farmington Republican Town Committee, he chaired the committee for four years. Paul was a member and past Commander of VFW Post 10361, and was chairman of the Farmington Veterans Memorial Committee that was responsible for the memorial erected in front of the Farmington Town Hall. In addition, he was a trustee of the Farmington Memorial Forest Committee and a member of the West Hartford Squires.
Dot and Paul were avid campers and enjoyed numerous trips in their travel trailer along with their beloved beagles. In February 2015, Dot and Paul moved to Middlewoods of Farmington and experienced wonderful care and friendships in their final years.
Paul is survived by his son Richard Menzel and his wife Lydia of Raleigh, NC; his daughter Susan and her husband Michael Johnson of Farmington; his granddaughters Laura Menzel of Cary, NC and Kathryn Menzel of Baltimore, MD; his brother-in-law Kenneth Harvey and his wife Irene of Farmington and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Jeffrey Menzel, his sister Eleanore and brothers Walter and Howard.
Paul’s family would like to thank the caregivers at Middlewoods and special thanks to Jackie from Visiting Angels.
A burial with full military honors will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 10:00 am in Riverside Cemetery in Farmington. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 am at Bethany Lutheran Church, 1655 Boulevard, West Hartford, 06107. Memorial donations may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church or to VFW Post 10361, 321 New Britain Ave., Unionville, CT 06085. Funeral arrangements are being handled by The Ahern Funeral Homes, Inc.
