Menzel, Dorothy (Harvey)

Dorothy (Harvey) Menzel, 89, beloved wife of Paul W. Menzel for 68 years, died Monday, April 25, 2016 at UCONN Health Center surrounded by her family. Born November 10, 1926 in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late George and Ann (Buettner) Harvey. Dot graduated from Hall High School and after World War II, she married Paul in 1947, moved to Farmington, and raised a family. She was an active charter member of Bethany Lutheran Church and used her many talents to serve the church and enhance the lives of everyone around her. For over 70 years, Dot cherished the warmth and friendship of her Sewing Club, affectionately known as “Club”. Avid campers, Dot and Paul enjoyed numerous trips throughout New England and the east coast in their travel trailer. In February 2015, Dot and Paul moved to Middlewoods of Farmington and enjoyed the care and friendships they experienced there. Besides her husband, Dot is survived by her son Richard Menzel and his wife Lydia of Raleigh, NC; her daughter Susan and her husband Michael Johnson of Farmington; her granddaughters Laura Menzel of Cary, NC and Kathryn Menzel of Baltimore; her brother Kenneth Harvey and his wife Irene of Farmington and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Jeffrey Menzel. Her family would like to thank the caregivers both at Middlewoods and from Visiting Angels who lovingly cared for Dot and continue to care for Paul. We would also like to thank the nurses at UCONN, especially Michelle and Barbara, who cared for us almost as much as for our mother. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 30 at 11:00 am at Bethany Lutheran Church, 1655 Boulevard, West Hartford. There are no calling hours and burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church or the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), P.O. Box 370614, West Hartford, CT 06137-0614.
