Howard, SR., Andrew R.

Andrew R. Howard, Sr., 93, ended a rich, loving, and joyous life on Monday, December 10, 2018 in the comfort of his home. Born in Queens Village, Long Island, New York, he was the son of Andrew Howard and Katherine (Haberern) Howard.
Andrew attended Public School Number 33 in Queens Village. He graduated Brooklyn Technical High School. In 1944 he was drafted in to the US Army Air Corps and was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi. He travelled to Wisconsin and Illinois for training as a Radar Technician. The war ended a few days before he was due to be sent overseas. In May 1946, he was honorably discharged from active duty with the Army Air Force as a Sergeant. After discharge, he remained with inactive reserve of the US Army Air Force. In 1949, with the establishment of the US Air Force as a separate service, his reserve service was transitioned from the Army to the newly established US Air Force. In September of 1950, in response to the North Korean attack on South Korea, he was mobilized in the rank of Sergeant to support of wartime operations. He served a one year tour of duty at Hunter Air Force Base (now Hunter Army Airfield) outside of Savannah, Georgia as a Radar Technician. In October 1952 he was honorably discharged, from the USAF.
Andrew attended photography school in New York for one year while in the Reserves. It is here that he developed his lifelong love of photography.
Andrew earned degrees in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Technical Education. He taught at Hartford State Technical College as a Professor of Mathematics from 1963 until 1991.
Andrew’s interest in covered bridges began on a family vacation in Maine (complete with black bear). He went on to write several books on covered bridges, acting as author, photographer and printer. His most popular book was the Covered Bridges of Madison County, Iowa: A Guide.
Andrew married Muriel R. Litke in 1957 whom he met at Bethany Lutheran Church. They were introduced by Charlie and Martha Kuehn. Andrew was an usher at Bethany Lutheran Church for many years.
Andrew leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Muriel Howard (Litke), Sister, Dorothea Howard, Son, Andrew R. Howard, Jr. and his wife Patricia, Daughter Ruth McCray and her husband, Neil, and daughter, Alison Howard. He leaves his grandchildren, Seth Howard and his wife, Melissa, Shelby Duchow, and her fiancée, Paul, Zachary Duchow and his wife, Jacque and Allison Laviero.
Service will be at Bethany Lutheran Church, 1655 Boulevard, West Hartford, CT on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends may visit one hour before the service at Bethany Lutheran Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church or to the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges (N.S.P.C.B) and mail to Ms. Jennifer Caswell, 535 Second NH Turnpike, Hillsboro, NH 03244.
