DuBois, Irene “Anita”

Irene “Anita” DuBois, 90, of Burlington passed away peacefully on Christmas Day, December 25, 2018. Anita was born in Killingly on January 5, 1928 to the late Irene and Wilfred LaPalme. She was a devoted, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was always very proud of her family.
Growing up during the Depression Era was challenging for her parents and, as a child, she soon found herself temporarily living in orphanage and foster home environments. In her early teens, she was eventually reunited with her mother and siblings in Manchester. As difficult as those times were, she always remembered them positively and spoke fondly of the Catholic nuns and foster families who cared for her when she was young. She attended Plainfield High School and Manchester High School and began working at age 16 to help support the household. Her work ethic was second to none and she would always claim that she can do anything that a man can do. This enabled her to begin a successful career at Pratt & Whitney, East Hartford, first in a “Ruby the Riveter” type position, while later navigating herself through the Administrative ranks until her retirement. However, since she was not one to be content sitting still, she returned to the workplace for an additional ten years at the UConn Health Center in Farmington where she finally retired permanently.
Throughout her life, whether preparing the many Sunday or holiday dinners for family and friends, or merely pestering her loving husband, Ray, of fifty-two years, about his scratch tickets, it was at home with loved ones where she derived great enjoyment and was most comfortable. Many years of caring for her family were not easy, however, as a series of health setbacks began to take their toll. She bravely fought through several illnesses and rehabilitations, as she continued to live her life the way she chose, with a tough, determined spirit allowing her to endure, but with a heart that was always willing to give all her love and support to her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Ray DuBois, son Paul and wife Eileen Shea of West Hartford, daughter Nora and Burton Pompa of Burlington, daughter Kathleen Goguen of North Carolina, stepson Dennis and wife Janet DuBois of Newington, stepson James and wife Lynn DuBois of Burlington, (11) grandchildren: Marlene, Ryan, Colleen, Jennifer, Dominic, Jason, Bethany, Jonathan, Joshua, Christopher and Jenna, (11) great-grandchildren: Brady, Evan, Courtney, Sophie, Joey, Colin, Tyson, Ava, Lucas, Zachary, Arabella and her precious pet Pomeranian, Tabby.
She was predeceased by her sister Lorraine, twin sisters Alma and Emma and her brother Anthony.
The family wishes to thank Anita’s wonderful personal care provider, Michelle Boucher, along with the professional services provided by the very caring staff at Apple Rehab, Avon.
Friends and relatives may call Wednesday, January 2nd from 5-8PM at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St., Unionville.
