Blanchard, Chrysostom

Chrysostom E. Blanchard, age 94, of Sunset Terrace, Unionville, husband of the late Genevieve (Dillon) Blanchard, died Tuesday, August 3rd. He was born in the Codroy Valley, Newfoundland, the son of Charles and Bridget Ann (Tompkins) Blanchard, on April 29, 1916, and moved with the family to the Farmington Valley in 1924, where he lived a long and happy life. He was a devoted family man: a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Chris was a friend to all, young and old, and generous with his time, talent, and treasure. He was a life-long Catholic, active at St. Mary’s parish for many years, especially with young people. During his 42 years at Pratt & Whitney Machine Tool Company, he was active in metrology, the study and application of accurate measurements, at the national level and held high level security clearance during the Cold War. Chris had abundant knowledge and love of nature, which he shared with his family in adventurous and creative ways. An accomplished writer and an entertaining storyteller, he had an inventive mind. He was also a pioneer organic gardener and a skillful baseball and tennis player. He leaves a daughter, Elaine, and husband Stephen Cullinan of Coventry; daughter Karen and husband David Demers of Upton, MA; daughter Kathleen Blanchard and husband Kenneth Hoffman of Lexington, MA; son Alan and wife Kim Blanchard of West Simsbury; seven grandchildren: Sean, Amy, Daniel, Kathryn, Matthew, Kelley and Travis; and a loving sister, Hellen Sullivan of Nashua, NH. He was predeceased by 10 siblings: Sr. Mary Celestine, Louise, John, Katherine, Genevieve, Fr. Michael Blanchard, Bernard, Ena, Cecilia, and Teresa. The family wishes to extend appreciation for the love and care Dad received from the staff at Avon Health Center.
