Conrod, Calvin Douglas

Calvin Douglas Conrod, 92, passed away peacefully on Friday morning (October 18, 2019). Cal was born on June 28, 1927 in Cambridge, Mass, a son of the late Douglas Franklin Conrod and Susan Shearer. Cal lived in Stamford for 43 years, and then at the Duncaster Retirement Community in Bloomfield for the past 9 years, where he could be near family and where he made many wonderful friends.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Cal was beloved by his wife Enid and his daughters who will remember him for his steady, gentle and compassionate nature. His first thought was always for the care and concern of others; he ended virtually every conversation with the words, “is there anything I can do for you?” His strong, guiding presence was a blessing to his family and the many friends he made throughout his life.
Cal was a graduate of Fryeburg Academy in Fryeburg, ME, joining the U.S. Navy in 1945 at age 17. He earned a degree in electrical engineering from Northwestern University and joined IBM in 1951, where he remained for his entire 37-year career. There, he was responsible for managing and directing production and safety standards for IBM computers worldwide until he retired in 1988. He loved technology and was an early adopter throughout his life. His career at IBM and his life with Enid afforded him the opportunity to travel extensively in the U.S. and in Europe, which he loved. He was a lifelong skier and shared his love of the sport with his family, skiing into his 80s. In retirement, he gave back countless hours to his community as a volunteer, teaching computer skills through the Stamford Senior Men’s Association, assisting senior citizens with their taxes, delivering Meals on Wheels, and serving on various boards and committees at Duncaster.
Cal is survived by his brother David Franklin Conrod and his sister-in-law Ann Conrod of New Canaan, CT; his daughters Laurie Conrod of Dana Point, California; Sarah Conrod DeFilippis and his son-in-law Anthony DeFilippis of West Hartford; five grandchildren: Kacie Chagnon of Georgia Center, VT; Brian DiMartino of Boston, MA; Katherine DiMartino of Kauai, HI; and Madeline and Anna DeFilippis of West Hartford; as well as three great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Enid P. Conrod and his daughter Karen Lynn Conrod.
