Griffin, Peter Jay

Peter Jay Griffin, 73, lifelong resident of Unionville and Farmington, passed away comfortably at home, on February 10, 2020, after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Jeanne Stuart Griffin. Pete was born in Hartford on May 20, 1946, the second child of the late Howard Griffin Sr. and Florence (Blanc) Griffin. Pete graduated from Farmington High School in 1964 then attended the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy, graduating in 1969. Pete and Jeanne were lifelong employees of The Ryan Pharmacy in Unionville since they were 16 years old. They eventually purchased the store from William Ryan Sr. when he retired in 1986. In 2012, after 50 years of continuous work at the pharmacy, Pete retired and sold his business to Walgreens, ensuring that all his loyal staff would continue being employed by them. Pete was proud to be a 50 year director for Greenwood Cemetery in Avon, a corporator for Farmington Savings Bank, and member of the Unionville Golf League. He and Jeanne cherished their yearly vacations to Maui with friends. Also, Pete was a huge fan of UConn men’s and women’s basketball, the NY Giants and the NY Yankees. Pete was an avid reader and loved doing so in all his different rocking chairs.
Pete is survived by his three sons, Patrick of Unionville, C.J. and his wife Beth of Collinsville, and Tim of Unionville. He leaves behind his adoring grandchildren, Michael, Kathleen, and Fiona. Pete is survived by his older brother Howard Griffin Jr. and younger sister Margery Griffin, both of Unionville. After Pete’s mother passed when he was a child, he was blessed to be raised by his second mother, the late Mary Alice Yodkins, who married his father, Howard Sr. after they were both widowed in the 1950’s. Private services and burial were held for family on February 13th, 2020. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you perform a kind gesture or consider donating to a cause close to your heart.

Peter and I were in the same classroom 1st to 8th grade. I was moved to see his name in the obits.

We were close, especially in the earlier grades. I remember having dinner at his home on Lovely St. His gracious mother taught me how to eat a baked potato.

I always tried to stop in to say hello at Ryan’s when I was in Unionville. He always had news of some of our classmates, FHS ’64.

    An upbeat, friendly guy.

My sincere condolences to the Griffin family. Pete and I were fraternity brothers at UConn and were in the same pledge class to Kappa Psi. We lived across the hall from each other and I still can remember him rocking away in his chair as he was studying. He will not be forgotten.

My condolences to the Griffin family. I went to school with Jeanne and knew Peter through Ryan’s Pharmacy. Peter would tell me he always got home late when he had to fill a prescription of mine that entailed the grinding and mixing multiple drugs. He was a pleasure to know.
