Saur, Mark Joseph

Mark Joseph Saur age 74 passed to a new life at home with his family on January 29, 2018. He attended Georgetown University where he studied Philosophy. He was a grant writer for numerous organizations, including the City of Hartford and The Artist’s Collective. He had a passion for learning and was a lifelong student with extensive knowledge in many areas and a special interest in Philosophy, Theology, History, and Technology. Mark was a man of deep faith and spent many hours volunteering at the Cathedral of St. Joseph. He was a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, in the Funeral Ministry and a Cathedral docent. He conducted many tours of the Cathedral, with stories and history of both the Cathedral’s architectural features and their religious significance. He served on various committees the Parish Council, Evangelization Committee, and was a Cathedral Ambassador. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mark was a kind generous man with great compassion for the forgotten of the world.
He was the son of Karl William and Edith Downes Saur. He was a precious treasure in the life of his surviving wife, Catherine Schickel Saur, daughter, Genevieve, her husband Ted Toyokura and grandchildren, Leonardo, Marion and Aleah. He leaves his sisters and their families, Emmy See, Katrina Schickel, Elizabeth Cappello, Karla Fazzio and (pre-deceased) Johanna Nelson, as well as a large extended network of family and friends.
Friends may call at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, 140 Farmington Ave., Hartford on Friday, February 2, 2018 from 4:00PM to 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 11:00AM in the Cathedral of St. Joseph followed by burial at Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Memorial donations may be made to the Family Institute of Connecticut, 77 Buckingham St., Hartford, CT 06106 or the Felician Sisters, 1315 Enfield St., Enfield, CT 06082.

    Jean and I loved Mark whenever we were in his company. We’d be talking about some family story (usually involving his mother Edith) when Karl would enlighten us with a quip or unforgettable morsel. What a family!
