Gladys “Dolly” (Abadjian) Bass Northup
Dolly was born on March 5, 1919 in Aleppo Syria. By the time she completed her primary and secondary schooling in Lebanon she was fluent in Armenian, Turkish, Arabic, English & French.
In 1947 she got a degree in RN (nursing) from the American University of Beirut, and a BA in 1950.
She started working in the American University Hospital, a few years later she worked in the Mina Hospital in Tripoli Lebanon. Subsequently she was hired by the United Nations to be the head of nursing in a hospital and three associated clinics in the Kingdom of Jordan.
There she met Burt Bass, a British diplomat. They were married in Lebanon in 1956 and they went to live in London. Two years later she became a British National and was given a diplomatic passport.
She was with her husband on his diplomatic postings in Hungary, Italy where she learned Italian, Jakarta Indonesia where he became consul general. The next tour was Ecuador where she became fluent in Spanish. At end of their tour in 1970 her husband had a stroke and passed away at the age of 48.
She returned to London and worked for a tour company called Wings as a tour guide, the knowledge of 7 languages was an asset. During one of her tours in Los Angles she met an American gentleman named John Northup.
In 1979 Dolly and John were married, she became a naturalized American and lived in Unionville CT. in 1992 her husband had a stroke and passed away. She lived alone for a few years, then she moved to a senior living facility in Houston, near her brother George until her demise.
She will be missed by all those who knew her.
Friends may call at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St., Rt. 4, Unionville, Friday (March 1), from 4-6 pm. The funeral procession from The Ahern Funeral Home will be Saturday (March 2), at 9:15 am, followed by the Funeral Liturgy in the Church of St. Mary Star of the Sea at 10:00 am. Burial will be in the family plot at St. Mary Cemetery, Avon
