Tharau, Joan (Humphrey)

Joan (Humphrey) Tharau, of Burlington, wife of the late Erick “Junie” Tharau, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on November 1st, 2019. Born in Hartford on January 21, 1944, the daughter of the late Stanley J. and Lois Petersen Humphrey, Joan was a member of the first graduating class of Lewis S. Mills in 1962. Joan worked many years for the Firemen’s Fund Insurance Company. She served as the Town of Burlington’s Democratic Registrar of Voters for nine years and also served on the Burlington Cemetery Association. Joan was a member of the Congregational Church of Burlington and was a past President of the Burlington Senior Center.
Joan is survived by her three sons, Scott E. Tharau and his wife Allison, Timothy J. Tharau and his wife Bonnie and Christopher S. Tharau and his wife Donna all of Burlington, her grandchildren who were the lights of her life, Melissa, Cassandra, Brennen, Justin-Michael, Victoria, Amber and Haley and she was lucky enough to know she was going to be a great grandmother next year. She is also survived by her sister Sue Quartiero and her husband Jack and her beloved Ed Zack and his family who were so special to her and made her life a much brighter and happier place. Her sons are very grateful for their companionship over the past 10 years. She was predeceased by her two brothers Neil and Glenn Humphrey. Joan was so appreciative of the calls from family and friends over the past few months. The family would like to thank the Hospice Program at Foothills VNA in Winsted for the wonderful care and compassion extended to Joan.
Friends may call at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St., Rt. 4, Unionville on Friday (Nov. 8) from 4:00-7:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held Saturday (Nov. 9) at 10:00 am in the Congregational Church of Burlington with the Rev. Wendell Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the family plot at Center Cemetery, Burlington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Congregational Church of Burlington, 268 Spielman Highway, Burlington, CT 06013 or to the Erick B. “Junie” Tharau Scholarship Fund, c/o BVFD, P.O. Box 1285, Burlington, CT 06013.
